Earthquake

This is Adele, again, writing for the team

Before I write anything else, let me just say that we did not even know there had been an earthquake in this part of the world until my sister sent me a text message asking about it. We're safe. Nairobi's safe. People just got a scare. We do not typically have earthquakes in East Africa.

Hut Update
I had to come to town again to draw more money for the construction of the hut. It is coming along slowly but surely. The foundations have been dug, and they are starting to make the bricks today. Yip, we make the bricks ourselves at ELI. Quite an interesting process. We have a machine that a Rotary club had donated years ago, and it helps tremendously with any and all construction projects.

VBS and LEADERSHIP Training
VBS is going GREAT! Tamara, Terri and I are wiped today! The Leadership Training Seminar started last night, which means that we lost all of our helpers. Pat and Linda are doing their training, which is going really well. Danette and Alissa went to see/help at ELI's clinic at our other base in Kipkaren for the day. Dave's been working on building shelving etc. for my house. All the orphanage parents are at Pat and Linda's training. So, today, us three had to work with 120 energetic little kids with the help of three Kenyan youths. Tomorrow morning, we're hiring one of the school teachers to come and help us with "crowd control."

As the week has been progressing, the number of kids from the community has increased daily. They must be going home every day and telling their neighbors about the program. Today, we had about 30 kids from the community, the most we've had so far. Some of the kids were telling Tamara that they had walked for an hour to come to VBS. (They explained that they could get there in half an hour if they ran all the way!) WOW. It's hard to imagine that! These kids were just 10 and 11 years old. Yesterday, the 10-year-old had her 3-year-old sister with her, but decided the hour walk one way was a bit much for the little one to make the trek again today.

MEDICAL
Other than their excursion today, Danette and Alissa have been helping with VBS in the mornings and then doing physical exams on all the children in the afternoons. So far, they've been routine exams, but one little girl (can't remember her name now, sorry!) had slammed her finger in a door three weeks ago, and the wound is now being treated by Danette. Another little kid (Obidiah) has malaria, so they've been treating him for that. And there are a lot of coughs and sniffles. The most major condition they have discovered yesterday was that one of the little girls, Brenda, has a VERY irregular heart beat. They are talking to the directors to find out if we can send her for an EKG. Would you please pray for Brenda, Obidiah and the little girl with the sore finger--but especially for Brenda's heart.
